At the age of eighteen, Patrick Leigh Fermor set off from the heart of London on an epic journey—to walk to Constantinople. The simple concept of this journey was to walk from the hook of Holland to Istanbul following the two main arteries of Europe: the Rhine and the Danube. This book is an extreme rarity. This first book (in what was planned as a three-book series) takes him down the Rhine to the start of the Danube. In the early thirties he embarks on a journey by foot from the Hook of Holland to Istanbul.
